The War on Women: 12.30pm to 1.45pm

Standing together against systematic oppression

Women around the world are speaking up and there has been a ferocious backlash. The courage of women who are insisting on fighting back when their freedoms are threatened or curtailed is both an inspiration and a cause for optimism. This panel will explore why there is such a determined and ruthless war against women, where women’s rights are at this moment and what women must do to gain – or retain – their freedom.

Curated by Jane Caro, the panel features Mona Eltahawy (editor of the Feminist Giant newsletter, an examination of gender-based attacks and the people fighting against them across the globe); Fatima Bhutto (Pakistani journalist, author and poet, who writes of the dangers for women in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran); and, Chelsea Watego (Munanjahli and South Sea Islander academic and author of Another Day in the Colony).

Actually Autistic: 3pm to 4pm

Navigating the world of neurodivergence

We live in a society that is only just beginning to recognise neurodivergence in women and non-binary people. So how does it feel to be misdiagnosed for years? Does greater public awareness lead to acceptance and inclusion when it comes to socialising? What are some strategies to cope with ableist systems? And what stereotypes do we really need to put in the bin?

In a world where we often hear about autistic people, this panel of actually autistic high achievers tells us about their own lives, on their own terms.  They'll be sharing about navigating social scenes and professional settings and what masking and mimicry mean. This will be an essential session exploring how everyone can be part of a world that is inclusive, accessible and full of support.

Curated and moderated by Amy Thunig, the panel features Chloe Hayden (award-winning actor and disability advocate, motivational speaker and social media influencer); Grace Tame (2021 Australian of the Year and survivor-advocate for victims of sexual assault); and, Jac den Houting (research psychologist and autistic activist).
